Modification L13 Blaník

We would like to inform you that our company, Air-Tech Ltd.. s.r.o. since early 2011 implementing design modifications glider L 13 Blanik by STC (Supplement Type Certificate) No. 10035295 and the AMOC (Alternativemethod of compliance ) No 10035384. This modification was created as a solution of EASA AD 2010-0185-prohibition of all flights. Designed a modification in cooperation with our company is the German company ADxC, (http://www.aircraftdc.de/) in late 2010 to 2011 and subsequently approved by EASA.

STC HOLDER, AD&C COMPANY OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED GLIDER L13 LIFETIME EXTENSION TO 5000HRS!

This modification is based on:

  • Exchange of aluminum 6mm rivets from the spar flange of L 13 Blanik and their exchange by hardware material Hi-Lock which has better fatigue characteristics. Such exchange allows quick and easy repetitive checks of wing critical area every 500 hrs.
  • Installation of girder plate on the spar flange,
  • Replacement of highly loaded rivets by 4 resp. 5mm rivets connecting L-flange to the spar webbing + installation of additional rivet at the root of the top spar cap.

This modification brings to customer the following benefits:

  • Immediate return of L 13 Blanik back into service with safe life 3750hrs with aerobatics or 5000hrs without aerobatics, if history operational data are kept within limits which are published in bulletins L13/045 amd L13/109a
  • Higher safety margin due to reinforcement and easy repetitive check of wing critical area.

Maintenance schedule:

  • System maintenance is completed in addition to the original manual and maintenancework complements the prescribed periodic inspections by 50/100/500, and annual.Monitoring of critical space glider is repeatedly performed at 500-hour inspectionusing non-destructive inspection using eddy currents.

The future potential of this modification:

  • Based on very detailed and thorough calculations, the wing after modification has safe life 6 000 flight hours with 12% aerobatic hours. However, without further detailed calculations of remaining parts of L 13 Blanik, such as low carry-through and horizontal stabilizer brackets, which were not done at this stage, the Blanik´s safe life remains unchanged

Work sequence:

  • After handing over of L13 Blanik in the Air-Tech Ltd facility, including all logbooks and records about previous service, we will carry out all necessary works for initial inspection of critical areas of wings, low carry-through and horizontal stabilizer brackets. All checks will be done by qualified NDT inspector.
  • If the initial inspection does not reveal any fatigue cracks, works relating to modification will be initiated. In case of revealing fatigue cracks in the critical areas, results will be sent to STC holder for further evaluation. In case, that further works are not possible and the airplane is considered unairworthy, the customer will pay works related to preparation works and NDT check:

The length of modification:

  • Expected time of modification appx. 4-8 weeks after delivering the modification set to our company.
